FAQ

  • To build databases, we research a region’s thoughtful funders and pull their grantees into our databases. With this strategy, donors can leverage the due diligence of professional grantmakers for their benefit and peace of mind.

Thoughtful funders might include community foundations, giving circles, family foundations with programmatic staff, institutional funders, etc.

Each database has about 1,000 nonprofits from the grantees of about 20–40 different funders.

We purposefully skew our databases toward medium and smaller community-based nonprofits. 70% of the organizations in our databases are under $5M in annual expenses, 40% are under $1M in annual expenses, and 10% are fiscally sponsored.

  • For this level of donor, donations often go further locally than nationally.

Most donors in this segment have been giving “reactively.” Giving locally allows them to potentially build a deeper relationship with the organizations, enhancing engagement over time.

  • No. While we do specialize in regional U.S. giving, we can support donors at the state-wide or national levels. Generally, advising on international giving falls outside the scope of our services. There are a few exceptions around international topics, such as climate change.

  • Many donors already know about the biggest, most established nonprofits in their area, so we focus on where we can add real value. Donors are excited to learn about new (to them) organizations doing incredible work where their dollars will make a big difference. For donations split from a $10K-1M/year annual giving budget, donors can make a big impact especially for small- and medium-sized organizations.

  • No. We source giving opportunities for donors whatever the scope of their charitable priorities in the U.S. (different local region, state-wide, or national). We do not specialize in recommending specific international-based nonprofits.

  • We do not include entities that engage in activities that incite or encourage violence or hatred, or that discriminate against individuals or groups on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other legally protected characteristics. We are unable to recommend nonprofits that operate in conflict with this policy. Additionally, while we recognize and respect individual giving to religious institutions, we generally don’t include specific religious entities in our databases unless they offer services that are inclusive, secular, and non-religious in nature.

  • Please fill out this brief request form to be considered. We review these submissions on a case-by-case basis.

  • We sell custom data sets from our unique databases–if you have an idea for a useful data pull/query, contact us to discuss.

  • Most donors we support are giving $10-1M per year, but we do support some giving at higher levels, such as $1-2M annually. However, we only recommend up to 12 nonprofits in one deliverable, and our recommendations rarely exceed a $250K per org recommendation.

We are best suited to support donors trying to develop a strategy for the first time around new issue areas and who want to deploy resources quickly. We can support donors outside of our database regions on a case-by-case basis, depending on our capacity, but we don't make recommendations for organizations working overseas.
